A branch of the British Red Cross Society was formed in the early 1950's at West Down House, and inaugurated by Mrs. Fraser with the expertise of Nurse Russell and Sam Tedman.

Some meetings were held in a room at the Bradworthy Inn and an annual fête was held at West Down during the summer.

Mothers with young children were encouraged to attend. This event gradually petered out towards the end of the decade.
